Why Business Attire Matters

When I was first starting out in the pharmaceutical industry, I had a boss who was the classiest woman I had ever met. She had a Phd in pharmacology, she was well travelled and she was easy to get along with. On our first day of working together out in the field, I decided to give my wardrobe a new twist and wear fishnet stockings with my suit. It was the 1980′s and shoulder pads, big earrings, and Madonna were at the height of popularity, so in keeping with the spirit, fishnets it was…..but not for long. One look from my boss told me it was time to nip into the local drugstore and trade them in for a conservative beige pair. I still shudder at my lack of style!

Fast forward to casual Fridays and things have really changed…..or have they? There seems to be some confusion between business attire, business casual, casual, and down right disasterous. It is important to dress appropriately for the environment in which you work, I know of some individuals that wear jeans and flip flops everyday, but remember that how you dress represents who you are in that all important first meeting. If you are job hunting, the outfit you wore Friday night to the bar just won’t cut it in an interview.  It is best to err on the side of professional than to be written off as not a serious contender. For both sexes, you can never go wrong with a suit and a sensible pair of shoes. Make sure your clothes are freshly laundered, hair is clean and up to date (no wings please) breath smelling fresh and not fried!
